The Pros and Cons of Using AI, by Henry W.

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is a relatively new way of doing things like writing and revising documents, revising or creating code, and generating images. There are obviously a million different ways you can use AI, but that is just the main idea of it. It is used to edit, revise, and generate things. It can define things, answer questions, and more. Everything seems just too good to be true; you shouldn’t be able to do all of these things for free. The use of AI comes with its’ pros and cons, so here is a list:

PROS

Human Error Reduction

Humans are capable of a lot of things, but everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. If you don’t want to spend the time downloading a browser extension such as grammarly, or revising your work the old fashioned way, AI is a good way to go. Instead of spending your time clicking on your errors and either re-writing or using an app like grammarly, you could use AI. Simply give it your text, and tell it to revise it, and after a few seconds, it will fix the errors, and it might even be able to tone your text to a different mood or feeling.

24/7 Availability

AI will forever be available until sources such as ChatGPT either shut down, no longer give free access, or have downtime. These are currently usable for free (with an account unless you are using ChatGPT’s 4o Mini), 24/7, and they don’t shut down for maintenance often. Of course, the amount of people on ChatGPT depends on the amount of people they allow and the servers if they crash. But for now, in short form, AI is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for anyone at any time.

Summarizing Text

Imagine yourself as reading an entire paragraph for a job application at your workplace. You probably don’t want to put on your reading glasses, sit back, and read an entire 20 minute paragraph on why that intern should be a good fit for the job. Simply copy and paste the entry into ChatGPT, and you can tell it to summarize the text. For example, it will point out the reason they stand out, if they should get accepted, and more. This is just an easy way to not have to waste time, and cut to the chase.

Unbiasedness

AI is completely fair and unbiased, so if you want to deal with a problem, conflict, or just determine which person should do what in any situation, just ask AI! They won’t pick a certain object or person or opinion because it is completely fair. AI can be trusted to be straightforward and unbiased, which is why it is such a good way to handle issues or situations.

Doesn’t Get Worn Out or Tired

AI never gets worn out or tired, which kind of goes hand-in-hand with the 24/7 Availability subheading. It is always available, and you can ask it as many questions as you want.

Potential Workarounds or Less Costly Ways to Do Things

AI can give you workarounds for problems, and it can give you options for less costly ways to do things. For example, it can give you potential workarounds for things that are unavailable or can’t be used. It can also give you less costly ways of doing things, like discounts for stores.

Speak to AI

With the newest features in ChatGPT’s technology, you can basically talk to AI. In the new update, you can speak to AI with your voice and it can send you back, within a few seconds, a good sounding answer, just like typing with AI. The voice, vocals, timing, visuals, etc, are all implemented perfectly, and it is overall a very cool new feature.

Detectability

Currently, it is almost detectable if AI has been used. Sometimes it is false, but some apps that are called “AI Detectors” can detect if content is AI generated. This is somewhat accurate, but obviously it has its flaws. It sometimes can’t detect plagiarism and there is no way to double-check if the detectors are lying or not. After all, they could just be a random outcome and the AI detector could be false.

Reflect of Its’ Errors

Did you know that AI can reflect on its errors? When ChatGPT was created, a feature was implemented that when someone mentions an issue with ChatGPT’s response, it can reflect on things like forum posts on the internet and fix its errors, and then when another person asks the same question, after the next data update, it will give it the revised answer based on the last person’s response if the revision was general and not focused on a certain way of writing the topic.

CONS

Hosted by Companies

Your activity may possibly be monitored and you don’t have full privacy on apps like DALL E and ChatGPT. This is because they have full control over what you say, and they have control to the answers of AI, and they can log your history of talking to ChatGPT. Therefore, you shouldn’t mention anything like Private Information, IP Addresses, Addresses, etc.

Is it ethical?

A lot of schools are still on the ice about using AI. Right now, at JWMS, you should not use AI for your work. In education, it does have its ups and downs. For education, it would incur more costs due to the amount of people using it. It also would have opportunities for cheating, plagiarism, security issues, and lack of transparency, therefore it is currently unethical to use in school. Some people deny that fact and use it, which makes it hard to determine who is using AI and who is not.

Lack of Emotion & Creativity

AI is almost emotionless; It can’t really describe emotion in text, most of the time. Something like grammarly can detect what emotion you are using, but it isn’t great at helping you change your emotion to another theme. For example, if your paragraph is sounding too dark and eerie, you might want to lift the mood, but for now you’re going to have to do that yourself. It also uses websources found on the internet, which have already been created, which is plagiarism if you use it for a text for school or commercially, and it is also just not creative because it uses sources that have already been created.

Increasing Unemployment

AI can do things like code, write, make poems, and even generate art. This is likely to replace some jobs and at some point there will be robots doing the jobs, which will increase the unemployment rate and cause people to lose their jobs. If AI ends up becoming so popular that all of its errors get revised, it would be a perfect candidate for taking over people’s jobs, which is obviously very bad for the economy, and it will cause some people to be homeless, lose a lot of money, and be in bad financial positions. At this time, it is important to choose a creative job that can’t be repeated by AI and is also enjoyable, so that you can avoid this.

In conclusion, AI has its advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, it is a cool feature. If it gets too good, there are a lot of downsides, and cons in general, and it shouldn’t be used in school. Using AI can be helpful but to ensure creativity and problem-solving, you shouldn’t use it often. AI is just like a human, but faster, and it is impressive the abilities that it has. AI shouldn’t be taken advantage of in a way where it plagiarizes, recreates someone’s work without citation, or just re-uses another source of information. It has some cool features like AI Summaries and AI Picture Generation, but it is still being worked on and is not perfect. Make sure to remember to cite that you used AI so that it isn’t used commercially without permission. If you are posting something online, don’t use AI without citing the fact you did, or it might be considered pirating information. AI is actively advancing, and will continue to grow in the future and will continue to improve.

Now here’s a question…

Do you think AI will take over the world?
