Ms. Kim: Her Opinions on Soup, and Other Things by Sofija N. and Henry W.

What made you decide to be an educator?

Mrs. Kim was in college studying for a high-paying job in 2001, but after the effects of 9/11, she rethought her decisions. As she thought this, she was working with a program with kids in Philadelphia, and thinking of this, she decided that a very beneficial job would be to be an educator.

Where did you go to college?

University of Pennsylvania

Where did you work before JW?

Kingsview Middle School, Germantown (Science Educator)

How long have you been in education?

2003, and took an 8 year break.

You are the administrator for EMLs. Can you explain what it means to be an EML?

EML stands for Emergent Multilingual Learners. These students are learning English on top of their home language, which also applied to Mrs. Kim in her childhood.

You are also the administrator for students with 504s. What is a 504 Plan?

Section 504 is a legislation that gives students with disabilities help with learning.

What was your first impression of JW?

“It’s huge, we are the largest middle school in Montgomery County, almost double my last school (which was very overwhelming).”

What is your favorite thing about JW so far?

Everyone has a lot of pride to be part of the JW community.

What are your goals for JW?

“I hope that we can work together to be more inclusive and to make a lot of gains in our achievement.”

What are your hobbies?

Eating out and eating good, new and fried foods.

(She eats sushi the most, close second is Italian)

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Haagen-Dazs Coffee Flavor

In your opinion, is cereal a soup?

“No. Because you eat the cereal, not drink the milk.”

Do you have an unhealthy amount of screen time?

Probably, yes. If you think of all the time JW Administrators use computers, but I do like to put my phone down when I get home, not carrying it around when I’m in my house.

What is the weirdest question that you have been asked in your job interview?

They always ask the staff that they hire, “How are you a lifelong learner?”, just like 6th graders.
