Do you enjoy reading? Why not head to the media center to check out some captivating, statewide-student-selected books to read?
The Black Eyed Susan is a student-selected award for new books in Maryland, where students nominate books in four different categories, which are picture books, fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. It has been going on since 1992, and fosters values of literacy and lifelong reading within schools.

Our school, Julius West, does participate in the program! You can get involved by heading to the media center and checking out a book in one of the categories. Once you finish the book, submit a google form located on the Media Center page in MCPS Canvas. If you read three books in the same category, you’ll be able to attend a party with all other readers at the end of the school year!
Here is some additional information about the Black-Eyed Susan participation:
You can only check out one nominated book at a time.
There is a raffle at the party, where tickets are entered by the amount of books you read.
If you read all the books in one category, you may receive a special prize.
