2022 World Cup: A Tournament Full of Shocking Defeats & Unexpected Victories by Keira T.

FIFA’s 2022 World Cup, being held in Qatar, is doing great! The World Cup, held every four years, is a time for everyone to cheer on their home teams and their favorite teams, or just have fun watching the games. The World Cup started on November 20, 2022, and will end on December 18, 2022.

The Teams & Games

There are thirty-two teams playing in a total of sixty-four games. The teams are divided into eight groups of four teams. All sixty-four games will be spread out throughout eight venues. Some teams have already been eliminated, so if you were cheering on teams like Canada and Spain, you’re out of luck for this World Cup.

Rankings & Titles

Currently, Brazil holds the most FIFA World Cup victories, with five in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Germany and Italy are right behind, each with four World Cup wins. In terms of individuals, the player (past and present) that has won the most World Cups is Pele, winning three with Brazil. As for current, very popular players, Kylian Mbappe has won one World Cup, unlike Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar Jr, who haven’t won any so far.

Shocking World Cup Moments

One of the most shocking games this World Cup was Saudi Arabia’s win over Argentina. Saudi Arabia has only won three World Cup matches before, while Argentina has won two World Cups previously. Another shocking yet incredible moment was when Cristiano Ronaldo broke a world record by being the first person to score five goals in separate World Cups.

Brazil and Their Shocking Defeat

Of course, if someone has made it to the World Cup, they are an incredible player. However, certain players and teams have stood out. Brazil, with currently the most World Cup wins, has become comfortable and is showing its readiness for this one. Against South Korea, they scored a whopping four goals toward the beginning, leading them to a 4-1 win. This took them to the quarter-finals against Croatia where they shockingly lost in penalty kicks. Brazil was predicted to win this whole thing, but now it’s down to Argentina and France in the finals.

France vs. Argentina

To finish off this World Cup, we have France against Argentina, playing on Sunday, December 18, 2022. France could win and make it their second World Cup win in a row, or Argentina could rip their victory away and take it home. It will be a close game, and win or lose, both teams will play the best that they possibly can.

FIFA’s 2022 World Cup is creating excitement and controversy all over the world. Teams are being knocked out and some teams are holding their own. Who are you rooting for and who do you think will take home the cup?
